A Raincoat and Hat for Izzy

This past week Mara decided her doll Izzy needed a raincoat and hat. So she went to work. We had found  files for free, printable, American Girl Doll Clothes Patterns and she used the one for Molly. I was so happy to see how much Mara has progressed in the sewing department. I was pretty busy so she only asked me a few questions and otherwise she just followed the directions on the pattern and did it herself.

We didn't have true raincoat material available so she just used some nylon fabric that a friend had just given to us.
Have you been sewing anything lately? Did your Mom teach you to sew and have you taught your children?
I love to hear your thoughts!

  2. Good job Mara! I am glad that your Mom taught you how to sew. You will be SO thankful later.

Abbi- as I mentioned before my mom didn't teach me much as I told her I didn't want to. She just taught me the basics. I wish she'd taught me how to make clothes. She also thought that it was too expensive compared to buying second hand so why bother. She used to make all her clothes from the 60's to 80's. That's when it was cheaper. But I've been inspired by your ways of repurposing and doing things frugally.

Last night I got out my machine (finally!) and attempted to repair something. It didn't go well though. I have a lot to learn. It was tough fabric to sew on. Later today I want to make my girls each a doll blanket out of some flannel I found at the thrift shop. That will get me going. Next up I want to try to make my oldest some PJ pants. I'd love to hear if anyone knows of any books or websites sort of "sewing for dummies" type of thing that focuses on following patterns to make clothes.

  3. Mara, you did such a great job!!
I am just learning how to sew. My mom sewed a little but never really taught us. Well, she taught us cross-stitching. I borrowed a sewing machine and am having fun with it. I made cloth napkins out of dish towels, and most recently a skirt out of two t-shirts and an apron. I still need a lot of practice but I'm getting there and having fun doing it.

  4. Thanks to all of you for your kind words. It is neat to hear how you are working to learn this fun skill as well.
Nola, unfortunately I am not aware of any website or book like that but most likely there is one somewhere!
