Prayer was the topic of our pre-school Sunday school class this morning. It is a good thing to talk about too. I think we can all use reminders to spend more time in prayer.
The theme at church this month for us is the book of Romans, so our class today was based around Romans 12:12. That verse says: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Another version says "Devoted to prayer." This verse alone tells me that prayer is important if we are told to be devoted to it.
In our class today we talked about how prayer is talking to God and how just like it is important to talk with our parents and our friends if we want to have a relationship with them - so it is also important to talk to God.
Throughout the Bible we see one account after another of people who prayed and God listened to them and often helped them in some mighty ways. We still have a God who is just as powerful today and He still listens to people when they pray. We need to make use of the power of prayer.
Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer (Luke 22:45, John 17 and many more) and we are to follow His example.
In Acts we see the early church spending much time in prayer. Here is an example: "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42
Instead of worrying - the best solution is to pray! "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Phil. 4:6
Prayer is powerful! "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." James 5:16 Let's use this tool that God has graciously given us.
This week I will be having more quiet time than normal as all of my children are off to camp. My goal is to spend more time in prayer. Times of concentrated prayer as well as much time spent in prayer as I work. Whatever your situation - I hope that you also can spend time in prayer!
