We have been doing a lot of making things lately!
Have you been making things as well?
Lately we haven't been doing so much making of Christmas gifts for us to give ourselves but rather to donate and sell at a fundraiser that we are helping out with. We have some other things we want to make too but that has been the project lately.
Mittens have been the biggest of those projects. I have written about making this style of mittens before but since that is what we have been doing lately I thought I would mention them again. I have several reasons that I like making these mittens as gifts.....
- They are a practical and useful gift (especially in our climate!)
- I can make them using things that I repurpose (and already have on hand). I use old felted mittens, old wool clothes (those that have shrunk are especially good) and sometimes pajamas for the lining.
- They are pretty quick and easy to make.
- I think they are cute and have fun making each one different and cute (I still have some decorating to do on the mittens above - though some I will leave as is).
Here is the link to the pattern.
Now, PLEASE SHARE YOUR IDEAS!
If you have a blog I would love it if you would share the link of your post, And for everybody I would love it if you would leave ideas in the comments.

These mittens are really cute! I was wondering though if in your climate (which is like mine) you find that they are warm enough. What do you do for kids (we spend a lot of time outside) on those days that are really really cold? We haven't found that great of a solution yet.
ReplyDeleteI actually might make something for my daughters, but maybe for their birthdays after Christmas, as we are thinking about not doing Christmas this year (perhaps not anymore, we're not sure yet). I am hoping to sew up some pillowcases for them with some fabric that fits their current interest eg. for my 5 1/2 year old horses and my 2 1/2 year old pigs or purple. I know its super easy and all but I think my kids will like it a lot.

ReplyDeleteWe are making etched glasses for my mom.
I have found, with our kids, the mittens get wet quickly in the snow. We double layer to keep hands warm but I was getting frustrated with the mittens getting damp so I decided to add a layer of PUL between the inside and outside layer of the mittens. We use old sweaters (wool is always fabulous but knits work too) or fleece for the outside, then the PUL waterproof fabric (if you aren't familiar with PUL its a very thin fabric coated with a layer of plasticy stuff to make it waterproof), and the inside layer is soft fleece. It doesn't add any bulk, keeps hands dry and warm and we are all happy.
ReplyDeleteNola,
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner! Life last month was so busy! These mittens are pretty warm but if it is really cold we sometimes double up mittens (like putting on a knit pair first and then these) to stay warm. Check out Sheree's comment for some additional advice!
I just wanted to mention that I can relate to your making a decision on what to do about Christmas. I grew up not celebrating Christmas and only do so now after much thought and decisions made to help us keep it simple and leave out certian parts of a normal celebration as well as a goal to steer clear of commercialism. May God guide you as you make your decision!
Sheree, Thanks so much for your tip! I think I shall have to try that- it is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteThankyou so much for this link I have been wanting to make these mittens for a long time and didn't know how. so helpful -but one thing is polar fleece any different than regular fleece?
ReplyDeleteThanks
