WFMW ~ Child training books

Today I thought I would share with you some books that have been very helpful for us in raising our children. When I was pregnant with our first child Ken and I read through "To Train Up A Child" by Micheal and Debi Pearl together. We were able to discuss the topics brought up and go over any differences we had before we were in the child training situation. That has really helped so that we can work together (Without any fighting) at raising our children.

"To Train up a Child" is a very interesting book to read, it is not that long and has a bunch of stories that they use as examples. They use scripture extensively on the subject as well a bunch of good common sense. I appreciate that fact that the writers have 5 adult children who all attest to the fact that their parents did a good job. The book really concentrates on the parent being the boss and being one consistently but also having a lot of fun with your children and being joyful.
We have found this book to be very helpful in raising our kids. We don't have perfect children but we aren't ashamed of them either. I don't do a perfect job of raising them either but I am trying. From time to time when I realize I really need to be reminded of just how I should be doing it, I read the book again. The "No Greater Joy" books are a continuation of "To Train up a Child."
I also included "Created to be His Helpmeet" in the picture as that is a book that has really encouraged me in being a good wife. It is written by Debi Pearl.

These books really work for me!
Have you read them? What do you think? What child training books do you like?

Created to be His Helpmeet completely changed my marriage 5 years ago when I read it. I've read it at least 5 times and absolutely love it. I have taught several small groups of women and have seen many transformed marriages. I have 4 grown children. I never read To Train Up a Child but we could have written it. We were firm but loving parents. All 4 of our children are walking with the Lord and have never rebelled. God has been good and His ways are wonderful!

Love,
Lori

When Kylee was 1 1/2, I went through Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp with a mom's Bible study group. I really liked most of what he had to say. I am going through it again and getting even more out of it since Kylee is 3 now. As with any book, there are things in it that you aren't going to agree with, but most of it has been very enlightening and a great help.

Yes, we have both to train up a child, and Sheperding a child's heart. They were both excellent.

I've read them both and enjoyed them both. When I read a book I don't expect to agree with every single point 100% but I really liked these even with that.

I love the Pearl's. They not only wanted the best for their children, but made sacrifices and choices that enabled them to tell others such wonderful godly truths. I commend their courage at a time when it was not accepted. Today, I find them still there holding out that beacon of truth that is so important. I know when I read Created to be His Helpmeet, I thought why don't Christian women talk like this with one another? And I realized for the first time, in a very practical way that my words could impact not just another person but another family. So now when someone mentions divorce in my presence, I go over the cold hard facts! I couldn't say enough out about them.

I am in the process of reading "created to be His Helpmeet" from the library. But even only halfway through, I plan to buy it to keep for reference and study. I plan to read "To Train up a Child" next, and am thinking I should just go ahead and buy it outright. Being his help meet is changing our marriage. We didn't have a "bad" marriage or anything, but it could have very easily headed that direction the way I was going. I was raised by a very domineering mother and father, though my father was submissive to my mom and still is. My husband was raised by divorced parents with a domineering mother and a worn out father. We both are learning God's way, essentially learning from our parents' mistakes.
