When I was contacted about reviewing this book I really felt like saying "No". I had heard of the book "Fifty Shades of Grey" when it was talked about in a Christian magazine and I had heard enough to know that I would never want to read it and I honestly didn't care to read a book that was going to discuss it either. I have been blessed with a good marriage and I have not had to deal with all the sexual sins/perversions out there and I would prefer to be as innocent about it as I can. So when I saw that in "Pulling Back the Shades" they would discuss "Fifty Shades of Grey" and Erotica, Intimacy, and the Longings of a Woman's Heart it sounded like a christian book that I would rather just skip out on.
However I also noticed one of the authors was Dannah Gresh (Juli Slattery is the other) and I have really appreciated the way that Dannah tackles tough subjects with practical thoughts and biblical application. I also started thinking about what my purpose for this blog is: My goal is that I would be able to encourage other women to live like the Proverbs 31 woman and that includes their role as a wife. When we read Proverbs 31 we hear about a woman who honored and blessed her husband and he in turn blessed her. That is what I want for me and that is what I want for you. So in the end I decided to go ahead and review this book so I could share some of the things I learned with you.
In this world there is evil at work that would like to destroy our marriages. A marriage is a picture of what the church is to Christ (WE are the bride of Christ) and Satan doesn't want that to look like a good thing. He is out to destroy it just as much as he possibly can. He will use any avenue that he can and he will certainly attack the intimate area of your marriage if possible. One of the avenues that Satan is using to attack this area of marriages is Erotica. Erotica is writing that causes you to dwell on sex. God created sex to be something that is wonderful and good - In a marriage. But when you read erotic or look at pornography, or are involved in sex outside of marriage then what God created to be good becomes something wrong and sinful. There are so many reasons physically and mentally and spiritually that God made it to work like He did. Life always goes best when we follow His plan.
I think Dannah and Juli did a wonderful job of addressing the issue of women and erotica and the dangers that they face when they read it. If in your life/marriage you have struggled with a good sex life, if you have been tempted to read Erotica (or any books that make you feel aroused by what they talk about - even Christian Romances can be dangerous) or if you have dealt with issues of rough "play" in your intimacy - I would really recommend reading this book.
This book is a tool that you can use to share with others who may be struggling in this area. If you don't struggle in these areas nor are trying to minister to those who might I would say to skip out on reading this book. Though Dannah and Juli tried to very carefully and tastefully talk about the subject there are still things discussed that I really would prefer not to know about. However the main book they are discussing (Fifty Shades of Grey) sold over 70 million copies in its first year and many women how profess to be Christians are reading it so this isn't something that only a few people are aware of. That one book is certainly not the only book on the subject either - so a christian response to Erotica was truly needed.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject (But realizing this could be a sensitive subject I will remind you to please keep your comments kind).
I received this book for purposes of reviewing but the thoughts that I have expressed are my own and I received no other compensation for writing this post.

I agree with you Abbi. It is good to know that when we run across someone struggling in this area that this would be a trusted Christian book for them. Thanks for sharing Abbi!
