What Does the Bible Say About Sin?

In our world there are many different view points concerning what sin is. Some will say that certain actions are sinful while others will just as adamantly say they are not. How blessed we are that God's word is there to answer those questions. When we choose to believe the Bible is truth and study it diligently it will clear a lot of uncertainty from our lives.

  What is sin?
"All wrongdoing is sin," 1 John 5:17
"Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness." 1 John 3:4
"Anyone, then who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." James 4:17

To clarify a little perhaps: "Sin is going against what God wants us to do."

Sin brings punishment.
This is what resulted from the first sin:
"to the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children." Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, You must not eat of it," "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." Genesis 3:16-19

It causes a separation between us and God...
"But your iniquities have separated you from you God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that He will not hear." Isaiah 59:2

The result of sin (without Jesus' intervention in our lives) is eternity in hell....
"The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." Revelation 20:13-15

Everyone has sinned.
"But the scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe." Galatians 3:22

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His word has no place in our lives." 1 John 1:9 & 10

"When they kept on questioning Him, He straightened up and said to them, if any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this. those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straitened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you." Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." John 8:7-11
-We also cannot pretend to stand there without sin. We are not sinless. Only Jesus is - but He choose not to condemn.

God doesn't want anybody to perish.
"The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believers in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him." John 3:16 & 17

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." Matthew 1:21

-Christ saves us from the penalty of our sins.
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 6:23

"Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." Matthew 28:20

"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures" 1 Corinthians 15:3

-Christ saves us from the practice of sin by transforming our lives.
"And, once made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him" Hebrews 5:9

"Nevertheless, God's sold foundation stand firm, sealed with this inscription; "The Lord knows those who are His, " and "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness." 2 Timothy 2:19

"Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship." Romans 12:1

I am so very grateful that Jesus came and provided a way of escape from the sin that had me bound. Aren't you?
