This week the boys and I dug up the last of our carrots. That was the last of the garden produce for the year. Frost had come some time ago and killed pretty much everything above ground.
Gardening is an interesting hobby. It can so often be filled with disappointment- the peas and corn don't come up well. Bugs attack the cabbage. The chipmunks eat the strawberries and who knows what happened to the apples. However gardening is very rewarding too! We are able to put up stuff for winter as well as being able to feast all summer on wholesome food. I was also very pleasantly surprised when Ken told me I was significantly under budget on food spending. That is by no means all thanks to our garden but the garden helps!
I may not have been able to freeze corn but I have a lot of dried herbs. Some things work and others don't, gardeners have to be able to roll with the punches and be grateful for what does grow!
I thought it would be fun to remember this years garden with some pictures- so here we go....

Wow you grew watermelon? What type or days to maturity? how did you do it? I'm asking since we are around the same zone (I'm 2b to 3).
I love gardening too but sometimes its a lot of work. I do a square foot garden so that helps with the work a lot. My girls each have their own small garden. They just go out and eat right off of it! We just pulled the rest of the carrots too. I love the purple ones we planted. We still have some kale out there, it does well in our cool climate. I put it in smoothies.
Our tomatoes did fantastic this year. I got some to vine ripen! And they were so tall! My beets don't grow big enough but are still good.
I just took out my carrots and onions yesterday. I was going to make a post about how funny the digging was but have been gone all day.
I know what you mean about some things not growing well, but still enjoying the process and what does come up. I do enjoy gardening even though I still have a lot to learn. Feeding my family foods that we grow ourselves is always rewarding. I love the pictures, too.
The small girl is doing work in the garden that is very nice. And they getting lot of things from their garden and hence that would really be appreciable.
We did grow watermelon though we had a little trouble getting them ripe. We have done better another year. We ate some that weren't quite ripe and still enjoyed them though. The type I planted this year was "Sugar Baby" which is 80 days to maturity. I got it from Fedco seeds. I have also used a MN one before but I can't remember what the name was exactly.
Thanks Abbi. I am going to try growing some heat loving crops with clear plastic next year. My friend had lots of success. She poked a hole in the plastic to put her plants into it.
